Tax measures to repay EU €750 billion recovery fund

The EU Summit took place over the weekend where leaders of Member States debated the €750 billion recovery fund. It is proposed that the money will be re-paid over a 30-year period using fund raising measures known as “own resources” which include tax measures.

The “own resources” include a plastics tax, which the Irish Government supports, a border carbon tax and a digital tax. Up until now, Ireland has opposed the introduction of a digital tax, calling instead for an international approach at OECD level. According to reports the Irish Government said they would examine any proposal on a digital tax before giving any response.
